Job Description

Job Opportunity: Power Plant Operator at Willamette Valley Project

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation for recruiting and appointing qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. You will serve as a Power Plant Operator at Willamette Valley Project. The operating facilities include a large hydroelectric powerhouse, a navigation lock, fish facilities, and a spillway. Your duties will involve:

  • Inspecting project areas and equipment
  • Observing, checking, and reporting operational data to the control room
  • Operating power project equipment to prescribed standards
  • Managing gates to control flows, pool levels, or to discharge debris
  • Operating the navigation lock and control machinery for valves and gates
  • Performing operator-related preventative maintenance checks
  • Maintaining security surveillance of the project
  • Performing transmission line disconnects or ground switches as required

Qualifications:

  • US Citizens
  • Experience in paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work
  • Demonstration of sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work of a Power Plant Operator without more than normal supervision
  • Ability to perform common Power Plant Operator duties in a power plant of at least 300-megawatt generation capability
  • Ability to restore a 15 megawatt or larger turbine generator to service after major overhaul in a 300 megawatt or larger power plant
  • Ability to work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee

Physical Effort:

  • Eye and hand coordination to operate switches and controls
  • Extensive walking, standing, and climbing vertical and inclined ladders and stairs
  • Operating large valves, applying servolocks, lifting deck hatches, and other jobs requiring pulling or turning force
  • Lifting and carrying equipment and supplies up to and occasionally over 45 pounds
  • Prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, pushing, and kneeling

Working Conditions:

  • Rotating shift, inside in well-lighted work area
  • Occasional work outdoors with exposure to climate extremes
  • Proximity to high voltages and currents
  • Exposure to equipment and machinery noises
  • Wearing safety equipment such as hard-hats, earplugs, and respirators
  • Must wear appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing
