Music Director
Bethlehem Lutheran Church (ELCA) – Hickory, NC

Bethlehem Lutheran Church, a welcoming and faith-rooted congregation in Hickory, North Carolina, is seeking a passionate and skilled Music Director to enrich our worship life through organ, piano, and choir direction. This part-time role is ideal for musicians who find joy in liturgical music and collaborative ministry.

Position Details:

• Average of 15 hours per week, with seasonal fluctuation
• Additional compensation available for weddings, funerals, and other life events
• Flexibility to accommodate high holidays and church seasons

Instruments:

• 1990 Gabriel Kney pipe organ
• 1979 7′ semi-concert Kimball grand piano from the Bosendorfer era

Responsibilities:

• Provide music for Sunday services and seasonal worship (Advent, Lent, Christmas, etc.)
• Direct and rehearse the church choir
• Collaborate with the pastor to plan liturgy and music
• Maintain musical instruments and the church’s music library
• Utilize worship planning tools such as Sundays & Seasons, Prelude, and CCLI
• Provide monthly updates to the church council and participate in ministry team discussions
• Arrange coverage during absences and coordinate with appropriate staff
• Participate in periodic reviews to promote growth and collaboration

Requirements:

• Proficiency in both organ and piano performance; additional musical talents are welcomed
• Understanding of liturgical worship and church seasons
• Bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent experience preferred
• Experience directing choirs and collaborating in ministry settings
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Dedication to fostering an inclusive, joyful, and spiritually rich musical environment
